US Election Result: 4 November 2020, 7.09 AM – European Time
Challenger Biden is not performing as well as predicted in the polls. Florida goes to Trump, Arizona to Biden – Trump accuses Biden of trying to “steal” the election.
The race for the office of US president turns out to be tighter than many polls have predicted. Neither incumbent Donald Trump nor challenger Joe Biden could surprise with overwhelming approval. Some polls had already predicted a landslide victory for Biden. So far, however, it appears that Trump is doing much better than the statisticians had expected, especially in the hotly contested swing states.
Race for the Swing-States
Thus a victory is actually decided in the few swing states. These include Florida, the three Rust Belt states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan and the neo-Swing state of Texas with its 38 voters.
In the important swing state of Florida, they fought a neck-and-neck race. According to Fox News and AP, however, the state goes to Trump. Especially with Latino voters Biden could not do as well there as he had hoped.
Several media have already confirmed that Ohio will also go to Trump. According to the AP, Iowa will also go to Trump.
The final result is still to come
A lot of time could still pass before there is actually a conclusive result. In Georgia, the counting of postal votes was delayed due to a software error. The states where the race is likely to decide are states that traditionally take a long time to count postal votes. In Battleground State Pennsylvania this could take until Friday. Also in the battleground Michigan, results are not expected until Wednesday evening (local time).
In a first statement, Joe Biden was confident of victory despite a close race. Meanwhile Donald Trump accused the Democrats in a tweet of wanting to “steal” the election victory.
As of midnight of our time the polling stations in the USA had begun to close. According to CNN forecasts, Joe Biden has so far won over Vermont, Virginia, Massachusetts, Maryland, D.C., Delaware, New York and New Jersey, among others. This was also expected.
Donald Trump can, according to forecasts, count on the previously expected wins in Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Kansas.
Congressional Elections
Parallel to the presidential election, there are also congressional elections. Fox News reports that the Democrats are able to defend their majority in the House of Representatives. According to forecasts by the conservative broadcaster, the party can win five more seats there.
